Influential Contemporary Graphic Design

Headspaces Pinterest Board for the campaign ‘Be Kind To Your Mind

One influential contemporary graphic design campaign that evidences design for good and societal impact is the “Be Kind to Your Mind” campaign. I discovered this campaign mainly through Pinterest while researching poster-based mental health design, and it immediately stood out due to its strong use of colour, simple typography and calming visual approach. The campaign focuses on mental wellbeing, encouraging people to understand their limits, take breaks, and be more compassionate towards their own mental health, which is especially relevant in a digitally influenced society.

The campaign uses a limited colour palette, mainly yellow and orange to give the idea of warmth and comfort to viewers, sometimes the colours are paired with light blue to show a contrast between the sad and happy feelings which creates a nice visual contrast. Headspace also use purples for night time associated topics, allowing frequent headspace viewers to understand immediately what their poster is going to be about.

The use of bold, white typography makes the poster accessible for everyone as it is easy to read making the message understandable for a wide audience. Specific words are often highlighted in brighter colours, which naturally guides the viewer’s attention and reinforces the key message. The layouts are simple, with clean shapes and clear spacing, which reduces visual stress and allows the audience to engage with the message quickly.

The targeted audience is ages 15–25. The visuals are not overly childish or cartoon-like, but they are still simple enough to feel calming and approachable. Having the visual elements designed like this is important because younger audiences, particularly those heavily influenced by technology and social media, are often exposed to fast and overstimulating content, by using minimal shapes, soft compositions and clear messaging, the campaign provides a visual “mental break” from more complex digital designs.

The campaign is effective in terms of impact because it promotes positive mental health awareness in a direct and understandable way. As screen time is high and digital fatigue is common, the message “be kind to your mind” encourages reflection on personal wellbeing and limits. The simplicity of the graphics makes it inclusive and easy for a wide demographic to engage with, regardless of design knowledge.

Overall, this campaign demonstrates how contemporary graphic design can positively influence public perception, raise awareness about mental wellbeing, and communicate important messages through clear and accessible visual design.
