My final direction focused on creating a physical, interactive book designed to help alleviate creative block by combining visual inspiration with guided prompts. Each double‑page spread introduces an artist or designer, supported by visual examples and contextual information, followed by a prompt that encourages users to apply similar ideas in their own work. This structure was influenced by my research into visual learning and the effectiveness of low‑pressure creative prompts.

Based on my research, I determined that a physical format would be most effective, as it provides a more immersive and focused experience. Historical and contemporary references, such as Swiss Style layout principles and the playful, exploratory approach of Wreck This Journal, informed my decision to prioritise clarity, structure, and accessibility. Rather than including space for responses within the book, I chose to present prompts for users to complete independently. This reduces pressure and allows for greater flexibility, enabling users to engage with the prompts in their own way without being restricted to a fixed format.

From experimentation and user feedback, I refined my layouts to ensure clarity, consistency, and ease of use. I prioritised a structured grid system, clear typographic hierarchy, and generous white space to prevent visual overload. This was particularly important in relation to creative block, as overly complex layouts could discourage engagement. User testing confirmed that clearer separation between imagery, text, and prompts significantly improved usability.

Sustainability and accessibility also informed my design decisions. I used print‑on‑demand production to minimise waste, tested layouts in black and white to reduce ink usage during prototyping, and ensured high‑contrast, legible typography to support a wide range of users. Ethical referencing and the potential for future digital expansion further strengthened the forward‑thinking nature of the project.

Overall, my research, experimentation, and feedback informed a series of considered design decisions that shaped both the structure and visual language of the book. The final outcome is a cohesive and user‑focused resource that guides users from inspiration to action, supporting idea generation and helping to overcome creative block.
