Ethical or Sustainable Subject
Ethics is described as ‘A system of moral principles’ (BBC, 2014).
Are the things we do morally correct? Looking at morally grey issues at the start of the project made me realise that there are so many ethical issues that are equally important and it is hard to advocate for them all. Because of this, I thought about how there are so many small sins that become big sins i.e a white lie evolving into a bigger lie which could impact someone’s life. “Small sins” often go unnoticed, but over time they can influence our decisions, and contribute to much bigger problems. It made me realise that everyday actions, even the ones we consider minor or insignificant, could have huge consequences.
The seven sins—envy, gluttony, greed, lust, pride, sloth, and wrath—show up in our lives in different ways. The sins are often seen as outdated or only relevant in religious contexts, but in they can still appear in modern day lives. For example, envy isn’t just about being jealous of someone else’s success; it’s about comparing ourselves to the lives we see on social media, Gluttony is not just about overeating, it’s about our obsession with overconsumption which is influenced by advertising with the constant push to buy more. Gluttony can also tie closely with greed, which is seen when companies prioritize profit over people or the planet. Lust is often reflected in the way people are objectified in film, TV, as well as online platforms. Pride is shown in our need to present a perfect version of ourselves online which leads to obsessing over likes and appearances. Sloth is being lazy in our minds, not caring about important issues. Wrath is most visible online such as hate in comment sections, cancel culture, or even cruelty toward animals.
I want this project to reach everyone, but especially people between 16 and 25 as they can influence people older and younger than them.
I want the video to be more for entertainment than education. Some people might not think the seven sins are a big deal today, but by making it entertaining and not forcing people to read statistics, it could help people think about these issues and see if they recognize them in their own lives. The goal is to get people talking and understand the moral problems we have now.
My overall goal is to create conversations and possibly reflection, if people begin to see how these “sins” are present in day to day lives, they might start questioning their own values and behaviors.
